“Oi! Shem! That unicorn’s going to make a run for it! Oh, it’s too late. It’s too late! Well, you’ve still got one of them.”

I’ve seen a lot of “Crowley doesn’t know how animals reproduce” which is fun and hilarious.  But this can be just as easily read as being really sad.

Right before this Crowley asks if God is wiping out all the humans.

Aziraphale tells him. No. There are other humans elsewhere that will be untouched. This is a tragedy, but there will be more humans.  There should be more animals.

He has no reason to think God would wipe out an animal entirely based on being tetchy with humans. And yet that’s exactly what happens.

Both of them learn what EXTINCTION is here. it’s collective punishment extended to children and animals, who have no comprehension of what’s happening or really any responsibility. God’s more than capable of individually punishing people if so inclined. But comes back to collective punishment time and time again. a few of you did something wrong… everyone will be punished for it. (there’s a reason collective punishment is forbidden by the Geneva Convention)

It makes their drunk talk of whales and gorilla hit really differently. and they focus specifically on animals that may be self aware enough to realize and be afraid of what’s happening.

I never connected the “damn big brains” Armageddon conversation with the extinction of unicorns at the Flood, and now I’ll be thinking about this all day.
